Many of the guests who stay with us at The Henderson come for relaxation and rejuvenation. We’ve found that one of the most sure-fire ways to do this is to spend a little time outdoors. Obviously, the beach is just a stone’s throw from your doorstep when you stay with us. But did you know that our property is also located right next door to Henderson Beach State Park, one of the treasures of Florida’s panhandle? As a guest of the Hotel, you’ll have access to the park by just using your room key.
The park offers more than 6,000 feet of natural, scenic shoreline. A beautiful three-quarter mile nature trail provides a rare glimpse of the coastal dune ecosystem and its abundant wildlife. With its sand pines, scrub oaks, and dune rosemary, you’ll have a view of some of the last remaining coastal scrub communities in the panhandle.
Enjoy your walk through ancient but still growing and shifting dunes and unique vegetation. The trail is ADA-accessible, and it’s even pet-friendly (just like our property)! Enjoy a beautiful vista from the top of one of the dunes. For the kids, there’s a modern playground overlooking the Gulf. Birdwatchers can enjoy observing a variety of wading birds, shore birds, and migratory birds.
The park is not just about scenery; the Rangers also offer frequent activities to educate guests about nature. One such event is Stargazing at Henderson Beach State Park, which is coming up in October. Volunteers from the Northwest Florida Astronomy Association will set up telescopes for public viewing of star clusters, planets, and galaxies, and they will answer questions about the night sky. Solar telescopes will provide safe viewing of the sun.
We at The Henderson have also been honored to partner with the Ranger community in several of the park’s events. For example, in August, we hosted Breakfast with a Ranger, where guests could meet with a Ranger in a relaxed, informal setting to learn more about the park and its plants, wildlife and activities. Please click here for information on other upcoming fun events.
When was the last time you went geocaching? Geocaching is an outdoor game conducted in the park, using hand-held global positioning systems (GPS). Basically, it’s an inexpensive, interactive, high-tech treasure hunt! Since participants use location coordinates to find caches, it’s a great way to learn more about geography. It’s also a fun way to learn more about the park while you enjoy the thrill of the search!
